Course Description

 

After this course, you will be able to actively participate in a group discussion about members of the group's thoughts, feelings, and opinions on a text. You will be given an legend or folktale to study each week. Then you will meet with a group to discuss your reading. In this course you will study the four following legends and folktales: The Fiery Tale (Chinese) by Hua Long, The Blind Man and the Hunter (West African) by Hugh Lupton, The Happy Man’s Shirt (Italian) adapted by Ruth Sibert, and Bear and Turtle Have a Race (Mohawk: Indigenous American) by Pat Betteley. 

 

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Give or seek personal views on the text and the reasons for their views. 
  • Relate the plot of the book and describe his or her reactions.  
  • Give comments on the views of others. 
  • Lead a group discussion by initiating the discussion, inviting others to join, facilitating the discussion, and concluding the discussion. 
  • Use reading strategies to understand a complex text, unfamiliar vocabulary, and determine the most important details in the text. 

 

Course Expectations

 

In order to obtain the Book Club badge, you must: 

 

  • Attend the full 30 minutes of the book club and participate. Your book club leader will evaluate your attendance and participation. 
  • Complete the weekly reading assignment. 
  • Complete the weekly reading task. 
  • Report your reading and discussion in a weekly quiz.

Grading

 

Grading Philosophy Statement: The book club is based upon a pass/fail system. Students who pass the course, will receive the book club badge. Those who do not pass have the option of retaking the course. There is no limit to how many times a student can take the Book Club course.
